Most people associate Elvis Presley in two simple forms. There's the young Elvis, the gold lame tatter'd, hip shaker, that brought "black" music into white homes. Secondly, there is what has become the "Fat Elvis" era. Jump suit clad, fat, bloated and sweatin his heart away, lonely, empty and drug fueled, divorced from his one true love, and playing live via satelite from Hawaii to the biggest television viewing audience in history. Which one is your favorite?
Some more wiser to the EP mythos, would signal, that Elvis also had a 3rd era, "The Movie Elvis." This is justly noted. However, The music created during the "Movie Elvis" era is...let's just say an acquired taste.
On that note, there is also a fourth segment, that no-one notices or is not old enough to remember. Usually this segment get's lumped in with "Movie Elvis" or "Fat Elvis." In reality, this fourth segment of EP's career is what I've always dubbed, The "Comeback Elvis." It's here, from 1968 - 1972 that EP will hit his peak, creatively, vocally, and musically. Let's take a look...
This is a song about a really fuckin weird year!
It's been almost two years since, legendary Stooges guitarist and Michigan native, Ron Asheton passed away, and it's time for a true tribute article.
When Asheton passed away in his Ann Arbor, Michigan home on Jan 9th, 2009 music fans lost something special. Ron, alongside his brother, Scott Asheton, and evil skin and bones psychotic wild moans Iggy Pop created the seminial band, The Stooges in 1967, they gave birth to true punk rock, everyman music.
When the Gershwin estate asked Brian Wilson to go through the catalog and give his special California spin on songs that are almost 100 years ago, Brian initially didn't think he could do any of them justice. It took his wife, Melinda, to tell him " C'mon You're Brian Wilson!"
So according to some Jack hole on Craigslist (yeah I'm not bitter) I'm harmelody tv's music expert. So I decided I would write about a sub genre of a sub genre that I have no Idea about and try and make myself look smart, and probably fail miserably in the process. Today I wanted to bring you my thoughts on an often misunderstood form of music, Emo. For years I strayed away from the thought of liking this Genre based on silly out of date and often condescending jokes about how Emo is just for spoiled rich kids who hate their parents for having money, or being affluent. True many bands along the way sullied the name of Emo based on even more dumb jokes like, “you know their an Emo band if all the members have a star tattoo”, or “they have to have the name of a day of the week or a month in their name to be an Emo band”.
