You better sit down for this. Because I am about to enrich the crap out of your life. If you havenʼt heard of the Vitamin String Quartet, then you need to open up a tab and youtube them right now. Of course, after that, come back, finish this article and then poke around Harmelody.com for a little while.
Vitamin String Quartet is an LA based group of classical musicians whose repertoire does not include Beethoven or Bach, but instead consists of Avenged Sevenfold, Muse, Alicia Keys, Coldplay and many, many, MANY others.
Whether or not you like classical music or string quartets is really besides the point. To hear your favorite songs and artists with an orchestra twist is kinda cool no matter if you know who Vivaldi is or not. While they usually focus on Violinʼs and Celloʼs, they do from
time to time include other non-string quartet instruments. And generally they perform the songs note for note of the original; covering entire albums of (and this is an understatement) VARIOUS artists.
How many albums do they have? Good Q. I can tell you in 2007 they had 232 albums out. You can see how it would be hard to keep count. You can also see how when I say that theyʼve covered everyone I mean it. Arcade Fire, Bjork, Flaming Lips, Interpol, Kanye West, Radiohead...the list literally goes on and on.
Tom Tally, who is a violinist and arranger who has worked on over 35 VSQ albums says "Vitamin String Quartet is about applying rock n' roll attitude to classical technique.” Thatʼs exactly what they do, and they do it well. If for no other reason then to play a game of ʻGuess this songʼ with your mates, you should check them out.
