There arenʼt that many music groups that have broken up or retired, in my lifetime, that Iʼve been disappointed about. With the obvious exception of NʼSync (joke). There is one though. One band I never got to see live. One band that stopped writing music before I was ready. However, the Coming-Out-Of-Retirement-Gods have smiled upon me as Dispatch has announced a 2011 Summer tour.
Dispatch released their first album, Silent Steeples, in 1996. An acoustic folk/rock album which was followed by studio albums released in ʼ98, ʼ99 and 2000 with more of an American indie/roots sound. Theyʼre best known for their songs like The General, Two Coins, Flying Horses and Bang Bang.
Their last official show was in Boston in 2004. A free good-bye show that was attended by more than 100,000 fans. The band did reunite for a few charity shows in July 2007 which benefited charities in Zimbabwe and then once more in 2009 for a show at the request of the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe.
Mid-November the Dispatch website began to feature a countdown to 2011 boasting the words ʻDispatch 2011ʼ. An event I think a lot of fans missed. Because after all, why constantly check the website of a disassembled band? Itʼs sort of like Facebooking an ex; pointless and makes you a little sad.
January 1st, 2011 Dispatch announced their summer tour. It kicks off June 3rd in Marrison, CO at Red Rocks and closes June 25th in their hometown Boston, MA. Sadly, the tour neglects the mitten state but, as most shows that fail to stop in the D, they do have a Chicago date, June 8th. My guess is that tickets will be no ʻsmall changeʼ. My other guess is that Dispatch is probably past their performance prime but, if quality of audience counts for anything (which I always think it does), itʼll be a great crowd to be in.
Dispatch 2011 Summer Tour dates:
June 3.4.5: Morrisson, CO - Red Rocks
June 8: Chicago, IL - Millennium Park
June 11: Berkeley, CA - Greek Theatre
June 18: Harrison, NJ - Red Bull Arena
June 21: Atlanta, GA - Chastain Park
June 24.25: Boston, MA - TD Garden
Tickets go on sale January 28th.
