Thursday night, July 28th, the Fox theatre was filled with some phenomenal music and great live performance. Death Cab for Cutie played their twenty-fourth stop in the ʻCodes and Keysʼ tour in Detroit.
While Death Cab was, of course, the main event, the opening band ʻFrightened Rabbitʼ was not to be missed either. Frightened Rabbit is a Scottish indie band formed in the early 2000ʼs. Currently the band has three albums out, their latest ʻThe Winter of Mixed Drinksʼ which was released in 2010. Their set was thirty minutes long and consisted mostly of songs off their new album and their sophomore album ʻThe Midnight Organ Flight.ʼ If youʼre looking to take a peek at these guys I suggest checking out the following songs:
Backwards Walk
Keep Yourself Warm
The Modern Leper
Swim Until You Canʼt See Land
And if youʼre considering catching them live. I have only this to say: DO IT! They put on a great live show and rock out pretty hard for an indie band. And ladies, they have accents.
After, what seemed like the worlds quickest stage change the lights dimmed and Chris Walla, Nick Harmer, Jason McGerr and, of course, Ben Gibbard took the stage. The guys opened with Bend to Square off Something About Airplanes. The next seven songs were off of seven different albums and the variety continued throughout the night. Playing two songs from Photo Album, four from Transatlanticism, Four from Plans, four from Narrow Stairs, six from their newest album Codes and Keys and even threw in one track a piece from Forbidden Love and You Can Play These Songs With Chords. They also played their Twilight: New Moon soundtrack single ʻMeet me on the Equinoxʼ, assuring that crowd that “No matter what you think, or what youʼve been told, this song it not about vampires”.
Obviously the music was great, but surprisingly the performance was equally fantastic. Itʼs easy to assume that because DCFCʼs music can be a little more on the chill and ambient side that the musicians would just stand there, holding their instruments with pensive looks on their faces. If those are your expectations, get ready to be blown away. The stage is really eye catching with massive LED screens displaying different graphics and images throughout the songs behind the band and the guys rocking out and feeling the music.
