You know what I really appreciate? A good live band. There is nothing quite like the satisfaction you feel after shelling out the moderate to big bucks to see a band and then leave feeling like you would have paid three times the ticket price to see that show again. This is how I feel after seeing Ian Sigmon, Justin Lawes, Jesus Alaniz and Bryan Pope. Also known as, Back to the River, Back to the Forest.
BTTR BTTF is a progressive rock/indie/ambient/experimental band out of Waterford, MI. Even though that description seems complex, it also seems accurate. They have rough melodies, not really sing along stuff, but not so rough that it's hard to listen to. And while you can definitely appreciate their unique sounds sand live show, there's something about listening to them after you've seen them live that takes it to another level.
I can confidently say that the absolute, hands down, best live show I've ever seen was MuteMath at the Intersectio in Grand Rapids. But BTTR BTTF gives them a run for their money. They shows are like seeing music.
There are some bands I adore for teh way they compose and play music and others for their brilliant lyrics. BTTR BTTF are neither of these. But their live shows leave me feeling like there has never been a more perfect combination of auditory and visual stimulation. And there's something about having those mental images to see while listening to them at home that makes their music that much better.
Sadly, due to a member movie out of state, Back to the River, Back to the Forest are performing what will probbably be their last live show at the end of February. I will be there. You should, too. They're playing at the Crofoot in Pontiac on February 18th with special guests The American Secrets and Sunshine Cadavers.
